More Than 1000 Turn Out for School of Ed 2012 Commencement Celebrations

May 22, 2012

Whew! The 2012 school year has drawn to an end. Last Friday and Saturday, we celebrated with our Class of 2012 graduates and their families, about 1000 people. Friday, we held the annual School of Education reception and hooding ceremony in honor of PhD and MFA degree recipients, 70 recipients, about 450 total in attendance. To borrow from Dr. Seuss, Oh The Places They Will Go! I had the pleasure of reading the names of every graduate along with a few facts about their research, or future plans. I was blown away by some of our students accomplishments and future plans. For example:

Marcus Benavides, an art MFA student uses 8-foot tall hand carved prints with is MFA exhibition consisting of seven larger than life, contemporary saints. During his studies, he has been in several national art exhibitions and he was selected to attend an international artist residence in Venice, Italy this summer. Marcus plans on opening a lithographic print shop based in Phila. Pa.

Rohany Nayan (above) was the winner of Tashia Morgridge Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship for 2010-2011 and was chosen to represent UW-Madison at the White House last summer for the inauguration of White House Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. Her latest accomplishment includes being named UW-Madison Outstanding Women of Color 2012. Rohany's dissertation focused on immigrant children and their families. Her research examines identity enactment through literacy practices and identity practices by children of three Muslim immigrant families from Morocco. Beginning this fall, Rohany will be teaching at St. John's University in New York City.

On Saturday, we hosted 650 guests, graduates and their families for our undergraduate and master's degree candidates breakfast. Board of Visitor Chair Marlene Hartzman helped welcome families and congratulate graduates. It was a wonderful event. When you get an opportunity, check out the 2012 photos listed under "MAY" on our photo galleries web page and on our facebook page.
