UW's Wampold receives top honor from Society for Psychotherapy Research

August 13, 2015

UW-Madison’s Bruce Wampold earlier this summer was recognized for his enduring influence on the science of psychotherapy as he received the Distinguished Career Research Award from the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR).

This is the premier award of SPR, which is a multidisciplinary and international organization whose members come from most corners of the globe. The.award honors a long career and a substantial body of scientific work that constitutes a major and significant lifetime contribution to psychotherapy research. The primary criterion for this award is the scientific merit of the nominee's contribution.

Wampold is the Patricia L. Wolleat Professor of Counseling Psychology at UW-Madison, and is the director of the Research Institute at Modum Bad Psychiatric Center in Vikersund, Norway. He is the author of the groundbreaking 2001 publication, “The Great Psychotherapy Debate.” The second edition of this book was published earlier this year.

To learn more about Wampold and his groundbreaking work in the field of psychotherapy, check out this story in the Summer 2015 edition of Learning Connections, the School of Education’s alumni publication.

And in July, an important and intriguing Slate.com article looked at the "gold standard" treatment for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The report then used the expertise of Wampold to examine why this course of action may be problematic.
