Budge receives AHEAD Pilot Program grant to examine stress-focused interventions

The UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research’s (ICTR) AHEAD Pilot Program recently awarded four new grants in response to the 2017 request for proposals.

And among those receiving an award in this most recent round of funding is the School of Education’s Stephanie Budge, an assistant professor with the Department of Counseling Psychology.

Budge’s research project is titled, “Psychotherapy Minority Stress Interventions for Transgender Patients: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.”

Budge explains that while transgender and gender diverse individuals are at an increased risk for mental health concerns, such as "anxiety, trauma-based distress, depression, self-harm and suicidality," there are no known published studies that have focused on psychotherapy interventions for these populations. 

This study will first investigate the possibility of "conducting a psychotherapy randomized controlled trial for transgender and gender diverse populations," and investigate how stress-focused interventions impact the health and well-being for transgender and gender diverse people. 

Budge will be collaborating with Ben Andert of the Wisconsin Trans Health Coalition and Department of Counseling Psychology colleague Stephanie Graham, a clinical associate professor and director of the Counseling Psychology Training Clinic.

The ICTR AHEAD Pilot Program provides a mechanism for junior investigators focused on health equity and disparities research to gain experience in translational research that will facilitate their future career development. Specifically, AHEAD awards support scholars who embrace an interdisciplinary approach to research, including those who genuinely engage community partners and stakeholders.

The AHEAD initiative is a collaborative effort of the School of Medicine and Public Health’s Centennial Scholars Program, the Health Disparities Research Scholars Program, the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health training program, and two Department of Family Medicine & Community Health fellowship programs. The ICTR Collaborative Center for Health Equity (CCHE) is home to the AHEAD program administration. CCHE faculty affiliate, Carmen Valdez, serves as faculty director. Valdez is an associate professor with the Department of Counseling Psychology.
