chool of Education Dean Julie Underwood is one of four finalists for provost of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University Communications announced Wednesday. The provost is the chief academic officer of the university, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the curricular, student and faculty life on campus. In the absence of the chancellor, the provost assumes the role of chief executive.

Marla Delgado-Guerrero, a doctoral candidate with the Department of Counseling Psychology, was one of four women inducted into the UW-Madison chapter of the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society during a ceremony on Friday, Feb. 7. Delgado-Guerrero’s research “examines psychological, social and cultural factors that influence academic persistence for marginalized communities in higher education. Specifically, she has been examining Latina/os in higher education."

The Division of Psychotherapy within the American Psychological Association has awarded UW-Madison’s Bruce Wampold with its annual Most Valuable Paper award for his article, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: A 50-Year Perspective on the Outcome Problem.”

The spring football game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, at Camp Randall Stadium. The annual scrimmage will give fans a chance to get an early look at Head Coach Gary Andersen’s 2014 Badgers, while also providing support to the School of Education’s commitment to bolstering student literacy, which is crucial to the success of individuals both within the classroom and throughout life.

A campus event in December brought together about 60 faculty members from UW-Madison's Department of Surgery and the School of Education to brainstorm about joint projects. Think of it as an "e-Harmony" for research. Dr. Craig Kent, chairman of surgery, said he hopes that it is at least as successful as a 2010 “speed dating” event with engineering faculty. That one resulted in several research partnerships between surgeons and engineers.

Valdez, an associate professor with the School of Education’s Department of Counseling Psychology, is a member of the American Psychological Association’s Committee on Children, Youth and Families. Much of her work is focused on improving the psychological well-being of Latino families.

The free public talk on Friday, Nov. 22, is titled, “Mexican ‘Retornados’ and Families in Mexico: The Impact of the Migration Experience.” The event runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in room 206 of Ingraham Hall. Pérez Padilla earned her master’s degree from the Department of Counseling Psychology in 2003.
